As per report says, CSK have been drafted a 5-man shortlist of players they wish to retain ahead of teh mega auction.

Though there have been reports of BCCI allowing franchiese to retian as many as 6 players, including Right-To-Match, an official decision is yet to be conveyed.

The five players that top CSK’s retention list include the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, and MS Dhoni.

Remarkably, the franchise supposedly created a retention list that did not include Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Maheesh Theekshana, and others. Considering that Dhoni would not be able to play until after the 2025 season, CSK made a very risky decision in letting go of some of their best players.

The owners of CSK had previously requested that BCCI reinstate the previous regulation that let the teams to keep a retired player in the uncapped category.

The board has not made its conclusion on the matter public yet, though. It is unclear if this kind of classification is permitted, but it is almost a given that Dhoni will continue to be in the lowest-paying group.

According to the aforementioned criteria, players who departed from international cricket for more than five years would be considered uncapped.

The regulation went into effect in 2008 and remained in effect until 2021, at which point it was terminated. 2019 saw Dhoni’s retirement from the Indian cricket team. It would help Dhoni and CSK if the rule was reinstated.

After CSK missed out on the playoffs in the 2024 season, Dhoni would be looking to have a great IPL 2025 season. However, a lot of this relies on the retention policy that the BCCI writes.
