CSK To ‘Not Even Use’ Uncapped Cricketer Rule to Retain MS Dhoni: Before the Auction of IPL 2024, the governing council announced a new rule for players- team allowed to now retain up to six players, with a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players, through retention or the Right to Match option.
When CSK fans learned that the uncapped player rule would be reinstated in the recently issued IPL Player Regulations 2025–27. They celebrated and their once-anxious hearts and souls were filled with joy.

The thought of getting to retain MS Dhoni for one more season soothed and overwhelmed the Chennai faithful.
However, there is no official news related establishing contact with the talisman or MS Dhoni himself confirming the same has come out yet.
The seventh stipulation—which specified that Indian-capped players might be considered as uncapped if they had not played international cricket in the previous five years—was the sweetest piece of news of them all, especially for Chennai Super Kings.
Why does this make CSK fans happy? This implies that MS Dhoni, the adored icon of CSK who last competed for India in July 2019, would be listed as an uncapped player in the forthcoming Mega Auction, which will make it more simpler and less expensive for the team to keep “Thala.”

“We are not sure at this stage. We might not even use it for MS Dhoni. It’s still too early to comment on this because we haven’t had discussions with him,” stated Kasi Viswanathan to TOI.
“Dhoni was in the US and we haven’t had discussions yet. Now I am travelling this week, so there is a possibility of some discussions in the coming week. So there could be some clarity then,” Kasi reinstated.

“We are hopeful of him playing but it’s a call Dhoni will himself make.”
It would understandably be of paramount importance for CSK (and preferable even the IPL) that Dhoni’s retention is ensured, for financial and professional success.
Dhoni, meanwhile, stated he would wait to decide whether or not to participate again until he saw how the regulations were written.
Hence, CSK supporters are left holding their breath in anticipation to see if “Anbu-Den” Chepauk would see another “Thala-darisanam” as the deadline for IPL teams to declare their retentions approaches—October 31 for the time being.
